How colleges are sorted
- Target:your score is inside the college’s middle 50%.
- Safety: your score is above it.
- Reach: your score is below it, or the college admits under 15% of applicants.
A balanced list usually has some of each. If most of your colleges are reaches, either add targets or raise your score: the SAT study planner sets a target from the colleges you pick and plans the weeks to your test date.

Common questions
- What is a reach, target and safety school?
- A target is a college where your SAT score is inside the middle 50% of admitted students. A safety is one where your score is above that range. A reach is one where your score is below it. Any college admitting under 15% of applicants is a reach for everyone, because at that selectivity most applicants inside the range are still turned down.
- What does the middle 50% SAT range mean?
- Half of admitted students scored inside it. A quarter scored below the lower number (the 25th percentile) and a quarter above the higher one (the 75th percentile). Scoring at the 75th percentile puts you in the top half of admitted students.
- Where does the data come from?
- The U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard, which publishes SAT percentiles each college reports. Scorecard gives Reading and Writing and Math separately. The total ranges here add the two, which is the standard approximation but not exactly the percentile of total scores.
- Why is a college I want missing?
- Only the 949 colleges that report SAT percentiles to the Department of Education are included. Many test-optional and test-blind colleges no longer report them.
- Does a target school mean I will get in?
- No. The labels describe your score, not your chances. Colleges also weigh grades, course rigor, essays, activities and recommendations, and many are test-optional.
