Science no longer counts toward your Composite
This is the change most ACT score calculators have not caught up with. Before September 2025 the Composite averaged four sections. On the Enhanced ACT it averages three: English, Math and Reading. ACT’s own instruction is to “compute the Composite score by averaging the three scale scores.”
The practical consequence is worth sitting with. If you are deciding whether to sit Science at all, it cannot raise or lower the number most colleges quote. It is reported separately, some programmes look at it, and it costs you forty more minutes on test day. That is a real decision, and a four-section calculator quietly hides it from you.
Why your raw score is not out of the number of questions
English has 50 questions but only 40 count. Math asks 45 and scores 41; Reading asks 36 and scores 27; Science asks 40 and scores 34. The remainder are field-test questions ACT is trialling for future exams.
And ACT states their placement varies between test forms. So if you have just sat the real exam, you genuinely cannot tell which of your answers counted — nobody can, and any calculator implying otherwise is guessing. Use this with an official practice test, where the answer key marks the unscored items, and treat a real sitting as an approximation.
Practising from a pre-2025 book? Your raw scores won’t line up
The old ACT was a different exam: English had 75 questions, Math 60, Reading 40, Science 40, and the Composite averaged all four sections. If your practice book predates the Enhanced ACT, its raw scores are out of range for this calculator — a 60-of-75 English simply has no row in the current table.
There is no exact bridge between the two formats, and we won’t invent one. Percentage correct is a rough guide — 80% right on an old English section suggests roughly 80% on the new one — but the question mix changed too, so treat that as orientation, not a score. The clean fix is one official Enhanced-format practice test, scored here: ACT publishes them free, and it recalibrates you to the exam you will actually sit.
Raw score, scale score, Composite — the three numbers, straight
- Raw score — the count of scored questions you answered correctly in a section. Nothing else: no penalties, no weighting.
- Scale score— that raw count converted to the 1–36 scale through the form’s conversion table, which absorbs difficulty differences between forms so a 26 means the same thing on any of them.
- Composite — the mean of your English, Math and Reading scale scores, rounded half-up. This is the number colleges quote, and Science is not in it.

- Known limit.
- These tables belong to one practice form. ACT is explicit that difficulty varies between forms — a raw 35 on one Math form is about as hard to earn as a raw 37 on another — so the same raw score can convert slightly differently on test day.
Common questions
- Does Science count toward your ACT Composite?
- Not on the Enhanced ACT. Since September 2025 the Composite is the average of English, Math and Reading only. Science is an optional add-on: colleges still see the score if you take it, but adding or dropping it does not change your Composite. Many calculators still average four sections, which has been wrong since the format changed.
- How is the ACT Composite calculated?
- Add your English, Math and Reading scale scores, divide by three, and round to the nearest whole number — half a point or more rounds up. Each section is scored 1 to 36, so the Composite is also 1 to 36.
- Why is my raw score out of 40 when English has 50 questions?
- Some questions on every ACT are unscored field-test items being trialled for future exams. On the Enhanced ACT, 40 of the 50 English questions count, 41 of 45 in Math, 27 of 36 in Reading, and 34 of 40 in Science. ACT says the placement of those field-test questions varies between test forms.
- Can I calculate my score from the real ACT I just took?
- Not exactly. Because the unscored field-test questions move around between forms, you cannot tell which of your answers counted. This calculator is accurate for an official practice test, where the answer key marks the unscored items, and approximate for a real sitting.
- Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the ACT?
- No. Your raw score is simply the number of scored questions you answered correctly, so there is never a reason to leave one blank.
